“Research Careers Are Built” – Prof. Fawole on Leadership and Impact in Academia

At a recent Faculty of Science Research Workshop hosted by the University of Johannesburg, PARC Director Prof. Fawole delivered a reflective message anchored in one central idea: “Research careers are built.”

Sharing insights from his journey towards becoming a SARChI Chair, he highlighted that academic careers are not accidental achievements, but the result of deliberate choices, discipline, resilience, strategic positioning, and a sustained commitment to long-term impact. He described the workshop as a reminder that meaningful academic progress is rooted in intentionally building systems that extend beyond individual contributions.

He further emphasised the importance of shifting mindsets in research environments:

♦️ from projects to sustainable programmes
♦️ from outputs to meaningful influence
♦️ from individual achievement to developing people and strengthening institutions.

The discussion underscored that the future of academia depends on researchers who think beyond publications and actively contribute to systems, capacity building, and institutional transformation, while remaining grounded in purpose and relevance.

The message was very clear: when research is built with intention, it does not only generate knowledge — it shapes people, strengthens institutions, and leaves a legacy that outlives the researcher.
