PARC Strengthens Doctoral Excellence Through Rigorous PhD Progress Review Week

The UJ Postharvest & Agroprocessing Research Centre (PARC) recently concluded its first Biannual PhD Progress Review Week, a three-day milestone dedicated to strengthening doctoral training and research excellence.

Over the course of the review, 11 second- and third-year PhD candidates presented their research before an independent external review committee. Each presentation was followed by comprehensive discussions, rigorous questioning, supervisor engagements, and individual feedback sessions, ensuring every candidate received valuable guidance to support the next phase of their doctoral journey.

Beyond evaluating research progress, the review process was designed to nurture critical thinking, scientific communication, research independence, and professional development, qualities that define exceptional researchers and future leaders.

As our Founding Director, Prof. Olaniyi Fawole, aptly noted:

“Producing outstanding PhD graduates requires far more than supervision. It requires mentorship, rigorous quality assurance, constructive criticism, and a culture where excellence is expected and continuously refined.”

PARC extends its sincere appreciation to our distinguished external review committee for their time, expertise, and invaluable contributions. Their independent perspectives not only strengthened the doctoral experience for our candidates but also provided important insights to further enhance our postgraduate training programme.

We also acknowledge our supervisors, postdoctoral fellows, academic and support staff, and students for embracing a culture where excellence is continuously pursued through collaboration, reflection, and lifelong learning.

Congratulations to all our PhD candidates for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence. We look forward to seeing your research continue to make meaningful contributions to science, innovation, and society.
