Conversations echoed between young researchers, future scientists, innovators, and mentors as the Postharvest and Agroprocessing Research Centre (PARC) officially opened its 2026 journey with its annual welcome session at the University of Johannesburg.
What began in October 2019 as a one-man vision has now evolved into a thriving multidisciplinary research community of 52 members, a powerful reflection of PARC’s rapid growth, scientific influence, and commitment to developing people through impactful research.
Welcoming the new cohort of interns, honours, MSc and PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers, PARC Director Prof. Olaniyi Fawole set the tone for the year with a message rooted in purpose, excellence, and accountability.
“This is more than a research centre,” he shared. “It is a space where people are developed, meaningful science is produced, and impact is created where it matters most.”
The annual welcome session marked not only the beginning of a new academic and research cycle but also a reaffirmation of the culture that continues to define PARC: discipline, accountability, innovation, and excellence.
One of the standout moments of the day came as new members confidently introduced their research interests, demonstrating from day one their readiness to contribute to a vision far greater than themselves. Their enthusiasm reflected the evolving identity of PARC as a hub for scientific discovery, agroprocessing innovation, sustainable food systems, and transformative research leadership.
From pioneering postharvest technologies to advancing sustainable preservation methods and strengthening food security solutions, PARC continues to position itself at the forefront of impactful scientific research in South Africa and beyond.
Now strengthened by both the SARChI Chair and the newly awarded DoA-ARC Research Chair, the Centre enters 2026 with growing momentum, expanded capacity, and a clear mission:
to develop people, advance science, and create lasting impact.
