From the laboratories of the Postharvest and Agroprocessing Research Centre (PARC) at the University of Johannesburg to the international stage in Kyoto, Japan, two PARC researchers recently carried their research beyond borders, joining scientists and horticultural experts from around the world at the International Horticultural Congress 2026 (IHC2026).
Held from 23–28 August 2026, the congress provided a platform for researchers to share ideas, showcase discoveries and build connections that can shape the future of horticulture.
Among those representing PARC were PhD student Mr. Yusuf Mukaila and Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Faith Seke, each bringing a unique research story to the global horticultural community.
From essential oils to intelligent preservation
For Mr. Yusuf Mukaila, the journey to Kyoto was an opportunity to share innovative work at the intersection of machine learning, nanotechnology and sustainable postharvest preservation.
His research, titled:
“Machine Learning-Optimized Encapsulation of Helichrysum splendidum Essential Oil in Binary Biopolymers for Sustainable Postharvest Preservation,”
explores how advanced technologies can be brought together to develop smarter and more sustainable solutions for preserving horticultural produce.
By combining machine learning with essential oil encapsulation and biopolymer technology, his work reflects the evolving nature of postharvest research—and the possibilities that emerge when science and technology work together.
Turning agricultural waste into an opportunity
For Dr. Faith Seke, the story was one of transformation and possibility.
Her research, titled:
“Valorization of Cactus Pear Peel for Functional Foods: A Sustainable Approach to Type 2 Diabetes Management,”
looks beyond what is traditionally considered agricultural waste.
Instead of seeing cactus pear peel as a discarded by-product, her research explores its potential as a valuable resource for functional food development, demonstrating how agricultural materials can be transformed into products with potential health and nutritional benefits.
Her work speaks to a broader vision of sustainability—one where waste can become an opportunity for innovation.
PARC on the global stage
Together, Mr. Mukaila and Dr. Seke represented two different but complementary dimensions of PARC’s research: protecting food after harvest and finding new value in agricultural resources.
Their participation at IHC2026 was more than an opportunity to present research. It was a chance to exchange knowledge, engage with researchers from across the globe and open the door to new conversations and collaborations.
As they shared their research in Kyoto, they also represented the dedication, curiosity and scientific ambition that continue to drive research at PARC.
From Johannesburg to Kyoto, PARC continues to take research beyond the laboratory, creating knowledge, building global connections and contributing to a more sustainable future for horticulture and food systems.
